Super Quotes #36 — Athletes' Motivation

“You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.”
— Michael Phelps, Swimmer

People say “the sky is the limit,“ but in reality there are no limits in life. Think about these examples:

  • Most people in the year 500 B.C. never imagined that we could travel the world quickly; now we have airplanes

  • Before the current olympic records were set, there were lower records. Most people thought they were impossible to break, yet soon enough the records were surpassed

Rules and records are meant to be broken. The only real limits in life are those that you self impose.

Nothing is impossible. To achieve something big, all you have to do is define your goal, make a practical plan, and put in the work to achieve it.

I'm a happy man, because I am successful in what I do, of course; but what makes me most happy is I have people around me that I love and who love me back. This, for me, is the most important thing. Nobody likes to be alone.
— Novak Djokovic, Tennis Player

Championships, accolades, goals, and successes are all great; you’ll definitely feel excited and happy when you get them.

But, those feelings are short lived. The problem is not that the big achievements aren’t worth it, it’s that their value doesn’t lie in the achievement itself.

The true value of an achievement is the bonds you build with the people you share it with. They shared the journey and the outcome with you, and through that you are forever connected. That’s love; it’s the only thing that lasts, and thus the only thing that’s truly worth going through the hardships of achieving something great.

“I hated every minute of training, but I said, don’t quit, suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”
— Muhammad Ali, Boxer

At any moment, you have two choices:

  • Work hard now —> achieve your goals —> enjoy your success for a long time

  • Relax and take pleasure now —> never achieve your goals —> endure regret for a long time

It’s hard to push yourself today because you always feel that you can just do it later. But if you don’t, you take the risk of making your future life much harder for much longer.

So do yourself a favour: make the commitment to do what you need to do today. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a small sacrifice to live your life in peace for the long run. This is the essence of delayed gratification.
