Fear of failure, afraid of the light, and the meaning of courage.
“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”
― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
Fear of failure stops people from even attempting to achieve their goals. But if you don’t try at all, then you have an absolutely 0% chance of succeeding. A 0% chance means that your goals are literally impossible to achieve.
Now let’s look at the other side. If you try at least once then you have a greater than 0% chance of succeeding. Sometimes it’ll be easy with an 80% chance, other times it might be 30%. At the hardest of times it’ll be extremely difficult, maybe with just a 0.1% chance of success. But, nonetheless, if you try it won’t be 0%. It’s never impossible if you try.
“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”
― Plato, Greek Philosopher
As young kids many of us were afraid of the dark. As we grew older we grew out of the fear…. but we picked up others.
One of the most common fears that people develop as adults is the fear of the truth. They hate hearing about the realities of the world, that people are self-interested, luck is harsh, and that you have to work really hard for everything that’s worth having.
You can try to hide from that truth all you want, but the reality will remain. If you want to grow and live a great life then you have to get over your fear of the light. You have to face the truth of the world, and conquer it.
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
― Nelson Mandela, First President of South Africa
Everyone is scared of something; we’re all human after all. If someone says that they’re “not afraid of anything” they’re exaggerating at best and lying at worst.
It’s far more admirable to be someone who acknowledges that they are afraid, but moves forward towards their goals in-spite of that. There will always be something that you’re anxious about or uncomfortable with. True courage is when you push on to achieve your goals no matter what you’re feeling. Your life is far more important than the emotion of fear.
